The theme being Princess Wencheng’s marriage to the ruler of Tibet for peace, this play is based on a storyline of facilitated cultural, economic, and social exchanges between the Han and Tibetan peoples t0 show the history,  culture, customs, and natural landscapes of the two peoples. It makes a comprehensive use of various art forms such as Tang Dynasty music and dance, time-honored Tibetan dance, theatre, Buddhist religious tune and combines the man-made stage with natural landscapes. Showcasing dozens of cultural heritage items by high-tech means, it blends together drama, music, dance and modern choreography, which constitutes a magnificent performance. This masterpiece has opened up a new dimension of Chinese epic drama. The play has five scenes and lasts around 90 minutes. On the largest and most splendid stage decorated with a three-dimensional scenery, it’s performed annually from April to October with a cast of over 800.

On April 20th, 2018, the first performance of the sixth season of “Princess Wencheng” was successfully put on and well-received by a full house. Up to 2017 the play had been performed 808 times for five seasons and attracted an audience of more than 1.6 million people. Revenue of 2014 from ticket sales, related creative cultural products, and tourism services surpassed a hundred million yuan. Improvements and adaptations have been constantly made each year with the premise that seasonal performances are staged as scheduled. For example, to make the stage setting more real and stunning, in 2015 we upgraded multiple special effects like smashing of the precious mirror, Buddha statues, scenic snow mountains, the sun and the moon and adapted ten effects including Tibetan village, highland barley waves, Daotang River, and eight auspicious Buddhist symbols.
